Overview
What's the game actually about?
Oubliette is the name given to the world of the dead, by its occupants. Souls enter Oubliette and remain until they are forgotten by the world. The Oubliette game focuses on these forgotten souls and their quest for absolution. Most ghosts lost in the afterlife are hopeless wastes, but some are able to break through their misery and regain true consciousness.
What's absolution?
Absolution is the process whereby a soul is saved from Oubliette. It's a rare event that is shadowed far more frequently by dissolution, the opposite process, in which a soul is slowly and painfully destroyed.
What characters can players choose?
There are two "species" of playable character, Lazarans and Interlopers.
Lazarans are dead souls that have overcome their self-pity and have received a measure of autonomy in return. They are the sort of ghosts that are able to achieve absolution. More importantly, they are able to fight back against the dark minions of Oubliette.
Interlopers are living humans that have managed to find a way to enter the underworld (through astral projection, drug use, psychic powers, etc). They are the physical world's front-line defence against the horrors that are attempting to break through.
Lazaran and Interloper players both have four Essences to choose from during character creation, for a total of eight playable character types.
Is there much difference between the character types?
Yes indeed. There are significant mechanical and roleplaying differences between the Essences, let alone between Lazarans and Interlopers.
What system does the game use?
The rules (printed within the book) are consistent with version 1.0 of Cemetery Corner's d10-based gaming system.
What other stuff is included?
The game book contains helpful essays on modifying the game universe and creating realistic characters, as well as an extensive GM's Section detailing a variety of nasty critters (both living and dead) to throw at players.
And much more...
