Seraphim Fleet Redux

Your ancestors fled the planet to escape the plagues rained down upon them by a greedy, alien civilisation.

So the myths once said.

Earth has awakened. Its great Hives now pollute the universe. A war is beginning to rage on the Unity borders.

The citizens of Earth are pushing further out each year.
You will suffer now for abandoning the survivors.
You will lose friends and family like they did.
You will fight bloody battles and revive old hatreds.

Seraphim Fleet will be resurrected.

Overview

What's the game universe like?

Seraphim Fleet Redux is a science-fiction game set in our galaxy. Hundreds of years have passed since a plague on Earth (known only as "the Disease") forced the survivors to flee into the darkness of space.

After leaving Earth, the refugees found themselves assaulted by large, biomechanical ships belonging to a race calling itself the Lantys. The Lantys were revealed to be the beings who had engineered the Disease that had destroyed the majority of life on Earth. Eventually, the Lantys were defeated by the human ships known collectively as Seraphim Fleet.

Soon afterwards, Seraphim Fleet joined with two other peaceful races (the Aten and the Kyreans) and the galaxy was peaceful for a few centuries. A treaty known as the Pax was forged between all three races and the people of the galaxy came together under the new government, Unity.

In the years that followed Unity's formation, the Lantys returned to Earth. The Disease had mutated, allowing the Terran humans to exist in huge industrial complexes known as Hives. The Lantys joined forces with the Terrans and together, they pushed out into the stars, reaching Unity's borders in a matter of years. Fortunately, before long, civil war had split the Lantys from the newly-named Terran Advance and the Lantys disappeared again.

The Pax has ended. The Terran Advance is waging war on Unity and the only thing left to do is fight back.

What races and factions exist?

The Aten is a technologically advanced race that once came to Earth and posed as deities to advance humanity's knowledge. The Aten race is ruled by the Aten Council and a smaller group known as the Akhenaten exists to smooth relations between the Aten and the Kyreans. Both groups claim membership within Unity, although some Akhenaten rebels refuse to acknowledge this.

The Kyreans are a proud race of humans, originally taken from Earth (as slaves, or so some would claim) millennia ago by the Aten. The Kyrean Syndicate actively fights for peace as a member of Unity, whereas a faction whose members call themselves the Black Raiders directly opposes Unity law. The Black Raiders are smugglers, pirates and worse, and all believe that the old Kyrean ways should still be followed.

Seraphim Fleet is the name that was given to the humans who fled their Disease-ridden planet when the Lantys first attempted to wipe out humanity. Seraphim Fleet ships make up the majority of Unity's law-enforcement efforts. A subsect called the Fallen Angels exists as a non-Unity off-shoot, and follows a strictly racist system of beliefs, worried that all aliens are conspiring against humanity as the Lantys once did.

The Lantys are biomechanical creatures, an ancient enemy of the Aten. Formally, the Lantys are still allied with the Terran Advance, although this sentiment varies wildly in practice. All Lantys "pilots" (if they can be called that) are members of the Lantys Hive Fleet.

The Terran Advance is the main offensive fleet of the Terran humans. Its ships fight a daily battle against the races of Unity along their borders. A second group, the Insurrexi Hive Militia (so called because its members are Terrans that have been trained in the terrifying Lantys Hives), is a rag-tag band of insane pirates and marauderering footsoldiers bent on the destruction of all Unity life.

What races are playable?

The core rule book contains character creation rules and ship/equipment details for the three major races; i.e. Kyrean, Aten and Seraphim Fleet.

Although the Lantys and Terran Advance do not feature as playable character types, they are explained in enough detail that Game Masters can model them with accuracy. A future book may describe rules to allow the Terran-Unity war to be acted out from the side of these desperate aggressors.

What game styles will SFR work with?

The game includes rules for both tabletop and play-by-email roleplaying. Furthermore, the galaxy is divived into vast regions to maximise the playable story styles.

For example, those who wish to play through the Terran-Unity war can set games in the border region that serves as the front line. Alternatively, those who dislike combat can play away from the fighting, in regions where the war is never even mentioned. There are regions to suit all story needs, from behind-enemy-lines action to the trauma of having your ship break down whilst on a routine transport mission.

What system does the game use?

The rules (printed within the book) are consistent with version 1.0 of Cemetery Corner's d10-based gaming system.

And much more...
